Jack55, first, those shots are magnificent! Second, I use Ap priority on my D5K a lot so I have my thumb tip resting on the command dial which makes my thumb sorta curve around the 4-way pad, though hand size may make it different for different folks. But, I'll have to try deadshot's fix, too.
Third, I've always maintained the only people who should be wearing caps backwards are catchers and photographers. Otherwise it looks silly, but then, I'm somewhat old-fashioned that way.

With birds... I always use shutter piority.
