I'm wanting to buy a d50 and I'm wondering what lens should I start out with. Is one of the kit lenses good enough for a beginner or would it be very beneficial to get something better? I guess I want something as close to "one size fits all" as possible. I understand one size does not fit all, I just want a real good all around lens to get me started.

I'm not looking to spend a great deal of $ for now, just kinda wondering if spending an extra 100-200 would really be worth it. Thanks.

If you want a one size fits all, then you need to get a lens that covers the 18-200mm range. There are a couple of 3rd party lenses that covers that range. Nikon's own cost $750 for the lens alone.

If you want to go that route, then just buy the camera body only and then buy the lens separate. There are several kits out there, the best probably is the one with 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. I would stay away from the 28-80 kit lens as it's not wide on Nikon DSLRs.

For places to buy, checkout B&H, Adorama and Cameta.
