There's always the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED http://en.nikon.ca/Nikon-Products/Pr....6G-IF-ED.html
I have one of those and it's great. Not quite the reach of the 150-500mm but much lighter. |

The Sigma isn't stabilized and won't auto-focus on a D5100. I had one and traded it in on the Nikkor 70-300mm when it came out to get the VR.

I still recommend the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED http://en.nikon.ca/Nikon-Products/Pr....6G-IF-ED.html

I used a Sigma 150-500 with great success on my nonAFn 5D2 before I got rid of it.
I then tried one on my Nikons and did not like the results. I used a Sigma 50-500 on a D2 years ago and heard that the newest version is supposed to be a lot better on a Nikon than the 150-500. You might also try a used 80-400 Nikkor but you will have to manually focus it on a D5100. We've been expecting an AF-S upgrade for several years now. I have the new Sigma 150-500mm that is stabilised and works great on the D5100, but now I have upgraded to the D7000 and lovin every minute of it !! Now I have beauty, speed and still the reach wit the 500. I think if I was to start over, I would get the 50-500, would skip one lens in the bag for those hiking trips !
