Good day,
My wife has owned the Canon XT for just over a year now, and overall, she is happy with the camera. But, now she wants to switch to the Nikon D80. She believes that this is a better camera. To me, and from looking at the specs, it is only "slightly" better .. higher resolution (10.2 vs 8.2), bigger LCD (2.5" vs 1.8") , and more auto-focasing zone ( 9 vs 7)... Other then that, the camera appears to be close... I know this is a subjective question, but how much better is the Nikon D80 over the XT ( not the XTi)... Thanks, Rowan. |

The D80 is a better camera, but I don't think it's worth the extra money. She's probably better off buying better lenses for her RebelXT.

I agree, buy lenses. I don't think the pictures would justify the cost.

The viewfinder would justify the cost :G

The D80 is a MUCH better camera than the Rebel XT/XTI, IF you know what you are looking for in a camera. Ofcourse most ppl will only see 10MP a piece and say "Heeey, why is that Naikon cost more than the Canon?... I'm getting the Canon, everyone knows it is the only Real camera!".
I would say to her "Go for it, babe! See what a REAL camera feels like!" Cheers to all and merry-go laughs! |

Get glass rather than a new body. If the question was going to the D200 as she wanted to move into Pro work or a D2X then make the change, if she is a hobbyist then there is no point at all and the money spent on glass (new lenses) is a no brain-er. Yes the D80 is a better beast than either of the entry Canon models but no point changing system as she is not going to notice any real improvements.

A REAL camera, eh? LOL. I had a 35mm Nikon workhorse in the early 90s. Now THAT was a REAL camera! Nothing compared to the light-weight weanies of today.

Is she using the kit lens? Auto or manual mode or somewhere in between? From what I read its the photographer not the equipment.

Okay, so we went ahead and purchased the D80 with the 18mm to 135mm kits lens. So far, so good. I think I will say about the D80 vs. the Canon XT is that the feel of camera is so much better. The D80 has a real nice feel to it, solid and comfortable.
