Considering that you are confining your choices to the used market, you don't really have much opportunity to try it before you buy it, to see if might care for another camera more. You could always try renting a camera for a week or so, but I don't know how many retailers in the UK offer that option.

It's possible that I could go new, if it was a really good price, but I am not sure of what to go for for the best and I am not sure I want a lot of bells and whistles as they say. It's a big decision for me as it would have to last a very long time so I have to make the right decision.

Go to a good retailer, and try out the D3X00, D5X00 and D7X00. That should give you an idea of how they handle. If you don't buy one then and there, at least you'll have a better idea of what you should be looking for in the used market.

And, btw, some retailers also sell used cameras, and usually with a warranty of some kind that you won't get on eBay, et al.
