SB-600
1. Power on
2. Press Zoom and - to get CSM menu
3. First item is the word OFF with a squiggle, that's remote mode.
4. Press Mode to set ON
5. Press ON/OFF to get out of CSM
6. Press MODE and + or - to change Channel and Group

Default is Channel 3 and Group A

Reset by holding MODE and ON/OFF until the screen blinks.

D80
1. Get into Custom Setting Menu (Pencil)
2. Go to Item 22 Built-in Flash
3. Turn on Commander mode in TTL.
4. Set Group A in TTL and Channel 3.

Use the defaults for now. You only need other channels and groups if you have more than one flash or someone else has the same equipment and is using the same settings.

The channels allow up to four photographers to have similar equipment in the same area and not interfere with each other.

The groups allow you to have multiple SB-600 or SB-800s. For example you have two SB-600s, one on the left in group A, the other on the right in group B. In the camera you can set group A to +1EV (1 stop more powerful) and group B to -1EV (1 stop less powerful). This will produce a 2 stop difference in the lighting so the subject would be properly lit on the left and more in shadow on the right.
