Hi, anybody could help for finding a good lense 17-70 with f2.8 for Nikkon D80? I think, 17-70 f2.8 will help for regular use. I will buy a 70-300 VR Nkkor lense for zooming. I am slightly considering the price....

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to Steve's!!

Sorry to say there is nothing with such a wide zoom range with constant f2.8. You can either get something like the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 or a range in the 17(ish)-55(ish) f2.8 range from Nikon, Sigma etc.

Or you go longer and lose the wide so 24-70mm f2.8.

I'veowned both the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 and Sigma 24-70 f2.8 with my Canon kit and they both do a good job. I no longer have the former and the latter is only a cheap backup in case a lens goes down at a wedding so I can keep shooting. Although it is cheap, don't read in low quality it gives great results but just can be a little long at 24mm with a 1.5x crop.

Hope that helps a little.

kuttens,

The Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 is a nice walk-around lens, but my copy isn't the sharpest on the block. It can also be a bit contrasty. Also, the lens opens to 2.8 at the wide end, which is not that useful, I'd rather have 2.8 on the long end.

Having said that, it's a nice walk-around lens, but If I had to pick again I'd get a new 18-70 or a used 28-70 2.8 for more.

What about the Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX lens? It's sharp and great for walk-arounds?

Jacques.
