Hi, I'm wondering if the Nikon TC-20E II 2x teleconverter will work and autofocus with the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G VR on a D80 ???

I wouldn't. You'll lose AF, make the lens probably impossible to handhold (even with VR), darken the viewfinder, and magnify any optical shortcomings that come with the long zoom range. I also believe you could damage the rear element as it will extend into the TC and likely make contact the element of the TC.

TC's don't work well with most zoom lenses. You may be able to get away with it on some of the higher end f2.8 zooms, but TC's were designed to work with fast, optically excellent primes.
