Here's the Nikon D80 I picked up, which cost me the equivalent of about $80 USD. It works, you can take images. (just)

If the mirror is up, you should see the sensor, not the shutter. I'm guessing you have a shutter problem.

am i being to obvious in saying that theres part of the shutter blocking the sensor so it will work but but there will be a big black mark on the bottom of every pic

Even when you change the shutter, the shutter count doesn't reset. It still reads around 5300 shutter activations in the EXIF. |
