In the focus mode center weighted and center there is a rectangle in the middle on the right side in the viewfinder and the focus locks when you put the shot on that rectangle and not until you have that centered on the subject..am I making any sense..hard to decribe...in the mattric setting that one rectangleis not present..is this normal and why..if you do move over to that rectangle your shot then is not centered.

That was also my thought!

I think it may be to do with the camera focusing on somewhere other than the centre AF area, in which case it may be time to select a different focus mode, but I don't have the D80 so I am only guessing.

I'm guessing you have the righthand rectangle "selected" as the focus spot. Those rectangles all around the center one, can be made to be the focus spot by using the multiselector switch. The one that is selected is darker/bolder, than the others.

I'm betting if you spent a moment with your manual, you'd figure it out.
