i have a few vivitar 285 flash units that have ben workhorses for me. will these work directly on my Nikon D40 flash shoe or do i need to do something off camera??

Check your owners manual to make sure. But, it's my understanding that the hotshoe on Nikon DSLR models is rated at 250 volts.
Some of the older 285s may have higher trigger voltages than that. The newer 285HV is usually lower. It's best to check one with a good, high impedence digital volt meter to make sure. http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html |
