I have just bought the D5000 which came with the basic 18-55. I need a lens with some zoom. What would U recomend that will not break the bank. This is my first SLR. I enjoy Bird Photos and other animal pictures. This basic lense just does not get close.Right now I can afford around $300, but can wait, Im really having a great time learning this awsome camera, also it is a teaching Camera in that it will answer setting with the push of the ? button. A GREAT first SLR.

Hi im quite new to nikon as well, but not dslr's having sold my pentax k20d to buy a D90, i too wanted a lense with some zoom, after lots of research i decided on a Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens. it cost me £390 in the uk. i know its a bit more than you wanted to pay but its a great lense, seems nice and sharp and has the VR which i think is important on a zoom. i was tempted by the cheaper sigmas and tamrons but all the reviews said the nikon was better.

Thank You for the input Dave. Yes I agree that lens seems like the one for all round photos with this Camera. I will save my pennies and look into that and others.
I am so impressed with this gem of a Camera. I had looked at the Canon, but Nikon offered so much more for less money. The 70-300 looks like a good buy. Richard. |

The 55-200 lenses should fit your needs nicely and stay in your price range.

Thank You Blueberry.
I priced the 55-200 today, it was $349(Canadian). My Tec at the camera shop, suggested i wait as they sometimes go on sale. Best she could do was $300+tax. That was on the Nikon VR 55-200. I might get a better deal on onother brand but I do like Nikon. Thanks. Richard. |

The Nikkor 55-200mm lens is a very good lens for the price. The Nikkor 70-300mm is also a very good lens and a bit more convenient with the longer reach.

Richard-
The Nikon 18-105mm is also a good walk around lens worth looking at in your search. Sarah Joyce |

Don't waste your money with anything shorter than 300mm if you like to shoot birds you will only want to go long in the future.... probably the very near future. Even when I work with a 600mm lens (admittedly on a 1.3x crop) I still would like more. 200mm is simply not long enough, yes it is a well priced and pretty good lens but not in my opinion a good use of your money.

My Nikon D-5000 arrived today and I put the Nikon 18-200mm lens on it and it performed admirably.

Thank You Sarah(etal).
I will be looking for a deal, plus have to save my money lol. Will have something for a trip to Louisville in September. I will price both the 55-200 and the 70-300. ![]() The Camera is a real jem and it is a wonderful learning experience. Im Lost without a Zoom though. Sarah, can you provide a sample picture taken with the 55-200? Thank You. Richard ![]() Last edited by RichardK; Jul 15, 2009 at 7:21 PM. |
