Why do you generally see more professional photo journalist using Canon DSLR's than Nikon's ? I have been to numerous big sporting events and events where some high position political figure shows up which naturally draws the top pro photo journalist and I have noticed that you will generally only see two brands of cameras there, Canon and Nikon. However, there seems to be a lot more of the pro's using Canon DSLR's than Nikon's. Why ? Is there something wrong with Nikon's pro DSLR's ? Is there a price issue here or does Canon have better glass or more lens options / Mabe Canon gives the pro's a better price brake than Nikon for advertisement / promotional reasons ? Can anyone answer my question ? Thanks.

Ken Rockwell has a fairly decent article regarding this subject:

I'm not sure if this is correct as I haven't got both cameras but a family friend told me when I asked him why he uses Canon and not Nikon (he is a professional and specialises in events and the company pay for any camera he chooses ) " I dont like Nikons greens they never look natural to me and I have to spent too much time post processing to get them right" "with Canon they seem to just come out right".
No doubt others here will shoot this down .

It's true what K R says in his article because I used to use Canon film cameras and my last one was the EOS100. A couple of days after I bought it the EOS150 came out so I went back to the shop and their answer was "tough" and they didn't want to know,so I was stuck with a two day old out of date camera. Which funnily enough turned out to be good because the EOS 150 was never liked as much as the EOS 100, which ultimately was very easy to sell.
The only reason I went over to Nikon was when I decided to go digital, Nikon had a new lens out and was the one who was making at the time the best rated walkabout lens, the 18-200mm which I still use.Canon at the time didn't have an equivalent. With my film cameras I always had three different lenses with me. Macro ,Mid range and Long range plus a converter. I wanted to go lighter with Digital. If Canon had had the 18-200 mm I dont know what I would have gone for. Oh and by the way I think digital photography is fantastic.

For me, the decision was pretty simple. My KM5D had failed, and I needed a replacement. A key reason for choosing one brand over another is the selection of lenses each brand has available. I needed to shoot an indoor equestrian clinic, and needed a large aperture, medium telephoto lens. Nikon's 85mm f/1.8D is superior to Canon's 85mm f/1.8 USM, so I bought a Nikon D90 instead of a Canon.
Don't beat your head against a wall trying to pick the best camera for you. Pick the brand by the type and quallity of the lenses you'll need. Once you know which brand you want, then picking a body is easy.

For me, the decision was fairly simple. As I transitioned from film to digital Canon no longer supported the FD lens that I had acquired over the years. They essentiall cut me lose as I had to buy all new lens, and no canon gear would accept those primes, even as secondary gear. It kind of left a bad taste in my mouth and I went Nikon.

My story as well. However, I shoot with a five year old Sony A300. Nikon D50 was my first DSLR, but I went with Sony for the in-body IS, which works with all my lenses.

It made me reconsider... that and some other "minor" things (such as the swiveling LCD display, for example) It really bothers me, because I was excited about the Nikon for many reasons. They do some things better, for sure, and the hue on Nikons can be great for portraits, and their colors look more organic and seem to better convey the mood, whereas Canon images tend to look impersonal and neutral. |
