I do a lot of macro work, and am about ready to give up on my manual multi-flash and bracket setup and try out the Nikon R1 system. I use a D2x. I hate the idea of paying $250 extra for the SU-800 controller when I already have an SB800 that has a commander mode. Nikon is very quiet about the potential for using the R1 outfit without the SU800 with cameras that do not have built in flashes. Has anyone used it with an SB800 in Commander mode instead of an SU-800 on a D2x or other such flashless camera? If you have, I'd very much like to hear how well it works.

Thanks,
Ross

I don't have either but here is the official word:

Nikon Canada R1C1 Speedlight Overview http://www.nikon.ca/products/sbr200-su800/

"For those who want to use an SB-800 or a built-in Speedlight of D200/D70s/D70 cameras as a commander, there is also the Nikon Close-up Speedlight Remote Kit R1 without the SU-800 commander."

Thanks. It seemed logical that it should be possible. I'll give it a try.
