Picked this up from a link posted on dpreview forums. Maybe some of you might be interested. The link posted on dpreview was of a German Neckermann store page but it is no lobger available.
The D40 is pretty much all that the D50 is with a 230K 2.5in screen, no status LCD and no in-camera focus engine, being able to function only with AF-S lenses.
I am posting here the pics I saved from that particular page.

This is number 4 showing the back with the big LCD. I forgot to mention that the D40 will support SD as well as SDHC memory cards. This is no big deal though as if Nikon wanted they could easily post a firmware update for the D50. All in all, the price in the neckermann page was something around 550EUR which is quite a lot, especially for this body, but word has it this body is intended to sell for less than 400USD which would be a great entry-level price.

P.S. ...and 475g in weight.

Hmm,

If this camera is not a hoax, Nikon may be doing something to their current line up... Perhaps discontinue a camera or two currently in production? I know that the D70s is harder to find w/the D80 on the market...

I don't see the D40 as a replacement for the D50 but maybe Nikon is planning on something else?

Perhaps the lineup will be D40, D60, D80.

Without the D50 & D70s, there would be quite a price and feature gap between the D40 and D80.

On the other hand, perhaps the D50 becomes a D50s with a few minor feature additions and stays in the lineup at or a little below it's current price point.

Any thoughts on this?

i say a year or so for d50 replacement. definetely not a d50s. just enough timetill d50/d70s stocks begin to disappear from retailers.

i think a d60 with 10mp, d50/d70 size and viewfinder, 2,5" screen, multicam900, and 2.5fps at about 700$ starting price with 18-55 or even 18-70 kit lens.

all in all, brilliant move from nikon with the d40.

Hmm, it will be interesting to see just how limited it is compared to the D50 when we get the full specs. As a keen gig photographer the iso 3200 option could sometimes come in very useful....

omg, if this is going to be reality then Nikon is betraying itself
it's small, unlike any other nikon dslr
it has no top screen, something i think allot of people use
and it has no focus-motor, which makes the whole nikon philosophy of "using the best of the old in co-op with the new" a big fat lie
