I intend to buy my teenage daughter a Nikon D50 as her first DSLR and have been trawling online stores and local camera shops to see what offers are on the table. Everyone seems to be offering the usual "kit" Nikon 18-55 lens with the camera so from a price perspective its pretty easy to do comparisons. However yesterday one of the shops I visited was offering the D50 with a Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 lens for pretty much the same price as the "kit" lens (£10 more).

The Sigma lens has a slightly different focal length but has the same aperture range as the "kit" lens. It also has a metal as opposed to plastic mount and seems to me to be of better quality that the "kit" lens.

Subjectively it seems to be a better deal. Am I right?

Checked http://www.warehouseexpress.com and the Nikon lens is £80 while the Sigma is £78.99 I wouldn't expect to pay more for the Sigma in a kit.

What price have you seen this at. The best I've seen was Currys digital at £377 for the kit with the Nikon 18-55.

£379 seems to be about par for the course with the Nikon lens. London Camera Exchange are doing the Sigma lens deal.
