is the monitor live so you can compose the shot with the lcd monitor or do you have to use the eyepiece..I have the 5700 now .. does it work the same way?

The lcd is not live.

Very very few dslrs have a liveview lcd.

Because of the larger size and heavier weight of a DSLR, you wouldn't want to compose shots using the LCD anyway, as it would be very difficult to hold the camera steady, especially with a telephoto lens.
