I have a D50 and want to buy a flash unit but do not know what would be the better choice between the SB600 or the SB800.

Any suggestions?

Hi DBC,

I have both and I like the SB-800 much better then the SB-600 mainly because of the extra power. The SB-800 also has a built in bounce card and comes with a diffuser. It is really nice to have enough power when using a bounce card that you don't need to up your ISO to get a picture. I suggest the SB-800 if you can afford the little extra cost involved.

I was in the same spot last month, and went with the SB-800, because of the price difference after rebate and discounts that the SB-600 do not have.

If you're in the US, you can use the link below to get the SB-800 from B&H for $295. Nikon also has a $10 mail-in rebate for this item, and it comes with a $15 diffuser that the SB-600 do not. So in the end, the price difference in more like $85, not $130.

'hope this helps.

Once you buy a SB-800, then you'll buy the SB-600 and start doing wireless, then another SB-600..then colored gel pack filters...then....well, its an addiction.
