Try UFRaw, from the opensource community:

ufraw and gimp works well together....when you open up a RAW file in Gimp it will place it in the ufraw program and there you can make all the adjustments needed for a RAW file..once you have made all needed adjustments click ok then is back to the Gimp for a host of features for the file to be saved or printed....

I have had my d80 for 3 days and so far so good...

well rounded programs and thx to Rey for the link....

You might want to try out any of the following.

Lightroom ($199)
Capture NX ($129)
PhotoshopCS2 or 3 when it is released this fall (wiht there raw tool) ($ LOTS)
Photoshop Elements 5 (I think that is what they are up to now) ($89)

None of them are free, but all better than the Gimp.

I have used the gimp for years now because I used Linux only. Once I used the above I gave it up. Lightroom has a free Beta I think is still avialable, an NX should have a 30 day trial with the D80. NX is a bit slow, but I really like some of the controls it has. It is great for color balance and Raw converson.

Not trying to knock the Gimp, for Linux users it is really all that is out there. I really tried to like it, but could not get good results. I used to run photo shop 7 in Wine instead. I gave up on Linux for photo work, as it is not possible to do a color managed worksapce yet. I am back to Windows till I can get a Mac.

Also Google's Picasa

Did Picture Project come with your D40 kit? It was in mine but I have not loaded or needed it. I think it will allow viewing of your NEF files. If not, you can download a free demo of LightZone or DxO Pro and each of those will give you a good look at the raw files and you might like what one or the other or both can do with them. For sure there are others.

I'm assuming you have a PC. OS X has a program included called Preview that (much to my surprise) displays NEF files as well as almost any other kind.

Yes it did come with the camera, I didn't even check it out because i thought it would just be to install the picture publisher for Jpeg files, Thats what i got with the Fuji compact so i just presumed. I have just put it in so i'll let you know how i got on.
