I have had the Nikon D70 for at least 2 years now.

Which camera would be a good upgrade from this one.

I love the D70 but would like to upgrade to more megpix.

Would this new camera D40xcompare with it higher or lower.

I take action sports photos mainly, have the 2.8 70-200 lens.

Its been a while since ive been on here, I need a fast but not to big camera.

.
You might take a look at the D200. Probably the nicest SLR for the money available today.

Best.

The D80 is the closest to the D70 in terms of control, features and price. With a 10 mp sensor, some new menu features and better implementation and functionality of the creative lighting system, the D80 is a small step up from the d70. If you need alot more camera, the D200 gets you into the semi pro class.

The D40x has higher resolution, larger screenand lower ISO than the D70 but it's not something I would see as and upgrade from the D70. It has 3 autofocus points instead of 5, it only performs autofocus with AF-S lenses so unless I'm mistaken you'd be using your 70-200 with manual focusing.

As mentioned the D200 would be a great camera to get. Don't discount the D80 though. Reviews I've read rate the D80 as 95% of a D200 for 50% of the price.

For myself I've decided to wait for the D80x or whatever it is that replaces the D80 before I upgrade. This is self imposed discipline. My film bodies lasted me at least 5 years so I'm determined not to chase every upgrade Nikon releases. Just my 2 cents.

I had a D70s and sold it to buy a D80. I wanted the viewfinder and the 10mp. If I had it to do all over again... I would have kept the D70s. So don't worry about upgrading anytime soon. It's not that I don't love the D80, it's just that I don't love it that much more than the D70s. To add insult to injury, I have seen the new owners pictures, he is a friend, and his skill far surpasses mine. Just one more example of it's not the camera stupid.
