Hello Everyone - I usually hang out in the Pentax forum and own a Pentax DL, which I am happy with. My daughterowns an N80 Nikon and about 4 Nikon lenses for it. She is thinking of upgrading to a digital D80. I am not familiar with Nikon and want to ask if this would be a good choice and if the lenses sheinvested infor the N80 will now work on the D80 ok.

I understand that the D40 is more limited on the choice of lenses, but I wondered about the D80. I think the D80 has been out for awhile, so is it getting ready to be replaced that you have heard of? It seems to be a very good middle of the road DSLR. Any help or advice will be appreciated - Bruce

Here's a link to the Nikon's web site that has additional information about the D80, as well as what lenses will work with it.

I don't know the answer to your question, sorry, but maybe this will help.

Thanks, that was helpful. It looks like the D40's will not work in AF with theearlier lenses that don't have the motor built into the lens, but the D80 and D200will. She could spend a lot of money having to replace lenses if she gets a D40- Bruce

Be aware that the sensor size of the D80 is half the size of 35mm film. The effect of this is that it maginifies the effect of the lens x1.5

so a 28mm to 80mm becomes a 42 to 120mm lens. This is obviously good for getting extra telephoto range but you lose you wide angle.

The D80 has 2kit lenses available, a 18 - 135 and an 18 - 70

The 18mm is of course subject to the x1.5 factor and so becomes 27mm at the wide end - giving you back your wide angle.
