I want to take pictures of star trails with my D40 using bulb mode. How do I keep the shutter open without standing there with my finger on the shutter button?

thanks, shane

You should be able to use the Nikon ML-L3 with it. But, I don't know if it will let you hold the shutter button down on it for as long as desired or not.

B&H has it in stock in the U.S. I don't know where to look in Canada but someone should stock it.

Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for $16.95 at B&H

Perhaps someone using it knows if you can continue to hold the button down in Bulb mode or not (I don't know if it will work that way).

It should work for your purposes (but, you don't hold the button down).

I found some posts from D40 owners using it. In Bulb mode, you can press the remote button once and the shutter will open. When you press it again, the shutter will close. You will need to point it at the front of the camera for it to work, and I think you're limited to 30 minutes for the time the shutter is open.

But, you may want to consider taking multiple 30 second exposures and combining them later instead. You may get better results that way.

There are a number of ways to accomplish that. Here's one software package designed specifically for that purpose:
