For the 1st time we are now privy to the ratio between pro and advanced amateur models: 7/1
http://www.steves-digicams.com/digin...kon_production

... and another tidbits:
"Separately, Nikon has maintained the lead in the DSLR camera segment in Japan during the period from January through November with a share of 43.3 percent, according to results of research by BCN, a market research company monitoring sales of electronic products. Canon followed at 39.9 percent and Pentax at 6.3 percent, says PEN News Weekly."
-> This period is prior to the D3/D300 releases

Despite:
"In other news, Nikon has officially announcedits manufacturer's inventory of the D40x camera, an entry-level sibling of D40-equipped launched in March 2007, has run out in Japan..."
-> ... another model coming?

Of note, however - the quoted segments are Japan only - not Europe, not North America. And I don't mean that to downplay the numbers. But, it's important to include the full context when providing information

That's correct both quotes did mentioned Japan in their corresponding segments...

-> Which makes the link to the main news all the more interesting in that the 10k monthly volume for the D3 appears quite small in the overall worldwide dSLR figures - Unless of course Nikon has another factory for the D3 somewhere which I rather doubt for that kind of volume...

Here's the year end update:

The official announcement is that Nikon is "number one for share by volume in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan."
