I've had my D300 about two weeks (upgrading from a D100) and I consider it the best photographic move I have made in 40 years. When the D200 came out a lot of folks said new owners would be disappointed with photos taken with the default settings. All I did on the D300 was switch it to RAW and set the D lighting to Normal and even the first shots would the "P" setting seemed outstanding to me.
Most likely my first shots would have been a lot better if taken in bright sunshine but I didn't have a CF mem card for mine (how stupid of me to expect it to actually have one in the box) and I hadn't charged the battery. I thought I would have to wait until the next day to get a card as no computer shops nearby had any,, then right on closing time I phoned up the local electronics store and they had a 4GB Kingston card, needless to say I got there in record time and bought it. As soon as the battery was fully charged I headed outdoors and snapped a few shots but it was right on sunset. I was quite surprised at just howthe D300brightened things up but it went too far. I will post one of those pix...

Anyway, since then I changed settings and now, things are ontrack...

Yes, I know what you mean about the 'brightening factor' of the D300. It is quite misleading, and I have to get in there, also, to kind of equate things bby changing some settings. It is a powerful camera that we have, and it is just a matter of (I guess) 'fine tuning' it a little bit, to get it to its finest point of image delivery.
