The first thing I bought for my D300 was a Uv filter, the second was an extra NIKON battery.

In cold weather I always shoot with my extra battery in a pocket near my body to keep it warm. With my Canon gear I would have to keep switching batteries back and forth when they got too cold. I do the same thing with my Nikon gear but so far have never had to switch them. Seems Nikon is designed for cold weather use more than Canon is. Just my own observation.

An extra battery is just as important as an extra camera if you are getting paid for a shoot. All IMHO.

Waiting to see your pics of Vegas.

Nicholas

I would definitely pick up a second battery. Especially if you use the LCD or flash or VR lenses, the battery can drain during the course of a day. It allows for uninterupted shooting while charging the spare. Don't skimp on a battery either...make sure you get the real thing, not a knockoff. You've spent over $2000 on your kit, no sense trying to save a couple of bucks on a battery.

I was going to say "in my experience you'll only need a second battery if you'll be away from the charger for more than two days of shooting like crazy", but as others beg to differ I guess some people go much crazier than I do!

I think the attitude here is "Better safe than sorry". I only have one batter for my D50 and it seems to last forever. But I intend to pick up a second one because I know that rechargeable batteries are strange beast, especially when the get a little old. I fully charged battery may give you a couple days of shooting time and time again. Then suddenly out of the blue only give you a couple of hours.
