I can get decent photos of the moon when using the tripod an remote. The problem I have is that as it gets darker the flash starts to fire an the pictures are not any good. Can you disable the flash an still take pictures with the D40 in the darkness?

You have to use one of the PSAM settings and then as long as you don't pop the flash up it won't fire.

There is also one of the vari-programs that is auto-flash off. But you would probably get better results using one of the PSAM modes, especially for moon shots.
