Got my lens back today. It works like a champ, and it only cost $84 to fix.

Sweet !!!
I tried my 80-200 on my N80...worked great...although one time it gave the f-- err.

The prior owner had used it on a n90 so it all seems to follow the trend.

I just need to find the time to get it packaged up and sent off to be re-chipped.

What was the turn-around time ?

I sent it in on November 23rd and got it back January 4th, but remember that there were a lot of holidays in there. And, of course, if you live closer to Huntington Beach, CA than I do, shipping will take less time too.

Glad to hear it. Post some photos when you have a chance.

I'm snowed in, so I haven't had much opportunity to use mine, but you're probably ok, so you should be able to take some sample shots sometime soon. I'd be pleased to see some.

I can get rid of the error, if I unlock the lens, and then twist it back on again, as long as the camera is on. It will not reset if the camera is off. I found through some searches that the meter times out for some reason. There is a setting on the D50 menu > pencil > #18 meter off. I changed it to 30 min. Now I do not get the error. I suppose I will get the error in 30 min. Has anyone seen this before? I wonder how much battery the 30 min metering uses?
thats the main problem you may have :P

Every manufacturer produces some excellent lenses and some junk. Tokina has some inexpensive, consumer grade lenses that won't stand up well to intense scrutiny, but it also produces some gems.

Cases in point:

Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF PRO DX (Tested)

Tokina AF 100mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro D macro

Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX

Tokina AF 50-135mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX

Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 Pro DX AF: Lens Test

Tokina l00mm F/2.8 AT-X Pro D Macro AF

Lens Test: Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 Pro DX AF

Lens Test: Tokina AT-X 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF D

To characterize any single manufacturer as a source of products with problems is misleading and irresponsible.
