I think I'm getting pretty close to having all the lenses I need (well, that I can afford, superteles are above my pay grade), so a D90 (or possibly a D300s) and a good tripod are next on the buy list.

If you are going to use video function seriously you should had picked D5000. It is awkward to shoot video from D90 viewfinder, all video cameras should have Vari-angle LCD. I got D5000 for a month now, I love it more than my D200. Cameras are developing very fast now, just a few months behind D90 Nikon managed to put in many good things into D5000.

The tiltable LCD display adds bulk to the D5000 camera body, making it less convenient to use the optical viewfinder, and more moving parts means lower reliability.

On top of that, the D90 has the AF motor the D5000 lacks. I'll keep my D90.

Good luck Artview, enjoy your new camera.
You've obviously weighed up the pro's and cons.
The only thing I would say about the swivel screen apart from its versatility is that it does a very good job of protecting my screen from nocks and scratches.(I use a holster type bag) Managed to pick up a few scratches from buckles buttons etc on my old D40. I find that I leave it closed quite a lot now just relying on the VF for info, something I hadnt expected.
We get into the habit of continously checking our pics even when the car/horse/child has gone from view and another shot isnt on. Before someone says whats the use of it if it's closed, I'm just saying that I pull it open when I need it,Im not opening and shutting it like a bar door.
The screen does add a bit to size, but it still is lighter than the D90. Obviously due to the focusing mechanism in the D90 body.
