Default D90 or D5000?

I have been using film SLRs for over 30 years and am going to purchase a digital slr next week. I have a couple of digital point and shoots ( Fuji and Panasonic 10mp 12X zoom) but want to finally upgrade.I take a lot of small children shots and zoo animals. (I work at a zoo)I think I have narrowed the field down to the Nikon D90 or D5000.
Is it worth spending more money for the D90? I intend on starting with the 18-200 nikon lens. I originally wanted the D300 but can't justify spending that much for a part time hobby to only print the odd 8 X 10.

Hi there art-

I originally began with the D-5000 camera and then I returned it. Re-thinking my strategy, I think that I would opt today for the Nikon D-90.

However, we should not discount the reports of "deadshot" who does indeed use a Nikon D-5000/Nikon 18-200mm lens combination. Perhaps he will chime into this thread as well.

If you can get what you need from among the Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM and Tamron BIM lenses, then the D5000 will save you some money. But if you need something special later, like a fast lens for indoor shooting, or a macro lens, you may wish you had gotten the D90.

Well I just left BB with the D5000 in hand. The guy took 15% off the $749. I couldnt pass that up, although the D90 is pretty sweet. My friend just bought the D90 last week, so I will be able to get my hands on it from time to time. I actually went in to look at the D3000, but I was sold on the video on the D5000, even though you have to manually focus it.

Congratulations, MrMayFace, on your new Nikon D-5000-

As, TCav, noted above in his post, the D-5000 works well if the selection of AF-S and third party lenses, can meet your needs. Have fun with your new camera and post some photos when you have a chance.

Have a great day.

You didn't mention if you had some Nikon-mount lenses from your film days... if so, more than likely your old lenses won't autofocus on a D5000.
