speedlight is just another name for an external flash unit - if you plan do do alot indoors then is certainly worth considering

Speedlights (flashes) are not just useful indoors. The are useful even in bright sunlight to fill in shadows.

i know but thats mostly for outdoor portraiture probably not the everyday shots most non wedding photogs do - before i bought a flash i'd personally buy a good tripod and head - but then i like landscape shots

whichever body is used first purchase should be a good lens - then wait and see where the biggest itch is for next purchases

After a good lens for me I would suggest an external flash. I'm not a landscape photographer so probably use a flash 20 times more than I do a tripod and that will include nearly every indoor or outdoor situation and doesn't matter if it is on a dSLR or my SX1 the difference in the results you can get are amazing. As the OP is wanting to shoot the children then I think there would be some big gains here.

This isn't the best shot but it was to hand and shows a snap with the SX1 that couldn't have been captured without external flash, either the sky would be exposed OK and the subject would be underexposed/silhouetted or the subject would be exposed correctly and the background would be blown out (white, no detail).
