Default D40 focus area selection

I’ve got a D40 with a 35mm F1.8 AFS lens on it 99% of the time. I love it except for one very annoying thing. I have been doing a lot of shooting in “auto no flash” for indoor shots. I always prefer having the Auto Focus Area to be single area and in the center.

By default the camera is set to “closest subject” so I have to go into the menu and change it to single area. This is time consuming and I want to be taking pictures, not changing settings. It seems that if I stay in the same mode on the dial, this setting doesn’t change. As soon as I change modes to Auto it then goes right back to closest subject.

Is there a way to prevent the focus area from changing as I change modes, or some other shortcut to get it done really quickly. It’s not available as a function button option.

I wish the D40 had the real switch on the back like the D200/D300 type.

Thanks.

When using the AUTO mode, the camera resets all the changes you made. P mode is the same as AUTO mode, except that it preserves your settings.

How does the flash respond in P mode? It looks like it will only flash if I manually open it? This might be the ticket. I'll try it when I get home tonight.

Thanks.
