It's hard to see how the D5000 will sell against that. They seem to occupy the same product space, with this being a small upgrade from that. I wonder if Nikon decided that the D5000 product space is just not viable going forward...

No doubt Nikon will announce some nice mid range DSLRs soon.
Canon and Sony have been selling a lot of 14-18MP DSLRs. I'm
sure Nikon will want a slice of that market.

Looks like nikon has jump back into the mp race with canon. 14+mp. Looks like it is going to be a good entry level dslr. Also since sony provides aps-c sensor to nikon. That kinda makes sense.

well that is expected, as the pentax and canon all have that ability.

it's likely using the same or similar Sony 14MP CMOS sensor used in the new Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 models from reports I've seen (probabably wiith a Nikon designed AA filter and tuning). I expect we'll see more models using that sensor as time passes (from Sony, Nikon and perhaps even Pentax), as consumers want higher rez sensors, and the latest 14MP Sony CMOS Sensors appear to do quite well from a detail/noise/dynamic range perspective.

Chances are, the newer Sony CMOS 14MP sensors will replace the Sony 12MP CMOS sensors used in a number of models as manufacturers update them; and I'd expect higher rez sensors to come soon.
