Default d5000 underexposure

Hi all, in a trip to USA a friend buy for me a d5000 and tamron SP 70-300 VC the camera underexpose 1 EV with the 18-55 and 1.7 EV with the tamron, because i live in Mexico return the camera is dificult and expensive, i can enjoy the camera with exposure compensation unless it is a sign of a mayor failure, what do you recomend.
Thanks.

You can use exposure fine tune in the shooting menu to set it up a stop and compensate another +0.7 with the lens.

What metering mode are you in?? Spot metering can especially result in inconsistent exposure, as you are metering a smaller portion of the frame, and if your subject is really bright, it will cause the rest of the frame to be underexposed.

Really, though most cameras will require some exposure adjustment, and that's just part of getting to know your camera. As long as the metering is consistent, dialing in exposure comp isn't unusual

As i learn the diferences with the metering system of my previous camera (sony a200) my results are better.
Thanks all for the info.
