Nikon hasn't released any 64 bit codecs for Windows yet.

If you can spare $14.95, I'd suggest using this codec. It's what I use to browse raw files in Windows Explorer when I use Windows (but some image editors have better browsing features anyway, so being able to see thumbnails of raw files in Windows Explorer is not really a "must have" feature from my perspective).

What you need is a codec from Nikon its free

Also useful is this codec to view Photoshop files this will cost you $20

That codec is 32 bit.

Nikon's current codec will not work with 64 bit versions of Windows, and most new PCs have been shipping with 64 bit Windows 7 installed (what the OP is using) for quite some time now, since 32 bit versions of Windows can't use much over 3GB of memory (32 bit versions support 4GB max, and some of that is used by hardware, leaving around 3.2GB available to the OS and apps).

So, if you're using a PC with 64 bit Win 7 (as many of us use now), and want to see thumbnails from .nef files using Windows Explorer and other WIC (Windows Imaging Component) enabled applications, you'll need to use a 3rd party codec with support for 64 bit Win 7 (since Nikon has not released a 64 bit codec yet).

People will probably want to read the list of supported cameras for the Microsoft download. It doesn't appear to support anything more recent than the D5000/D90 generation of Nikons. FWIW
