Default A Tough Day in the Field

It was one of those days. I got to the field at Horicon NWR, but someone borrowed the bug repellant from the car. The plan for the day was upland birds, so I hiked prairie trails that were interspread with woodlots. There were plenty of species, but I was having trouble getting close. Being a federal refuge I was restricted to the trail. The tiny, non plant things in these pics are the birds.

Yellowthroat

Song Sparrow

A young Downey

Another Song Sparrow earning its name

Field Sparrow

Default The highlight of the day... Series

The mosquitos were bad. The flies were worse. They were carrying cell phones and were calling their fly friends in as reinforcements. As a came around the bend in the trail, this is what I saw.

Then the sibling bounded playfully onto the trail.

This one saw my non-moving form and it wasn't going to take its eye off of me. The rest of the sequence. Ever notice how they can keep their ears riveted on you?

A few more bird pics from the day with a little more clutter than I'd prefer. The flies and skeeters were driving me out of the field.

Song Sparrow

Another

Bobolink

I think this is a Savanah Sparrow

A Willow Flycatcher Likely.

Brown Thrasher.

Play was tough. Tomorrow its putting the camera away and back to work.

Gorgeous shots. The birds seem to be catching lots of bugs!
