Some teleconverters don't make their presence known, so the camera still thinks it's dealing with 300mm f/5.6 instead of 420mm f/8.0. (You're probably fortunate.) At the very least, they'll have trouble AFing unless the scene is very well lit and has lots of contrast.

I had a TC1.4 and TC2.0 a few years back and the novelty quickly fell away after I found it/they would work on some lenses reasonably well and not so well on others. More often than not they would add zoom but destroy quality, but that would depend on which lens and what zoom you used, as one or two shots were almost eye opening...

In general, 1.4X teleconverters are not too bad. But the 2X generic (cheap) teleconverters can be pretty bad.

I used to have one that I eventually started calling "The Purple Fringe Machine". in low contrast scenes, it wasn't too bad, but when I was lucky, I could crop out the bad parts. It was too much trouble.

Even good (expensive) teleconverters rely on the quality of the main lens you use them with. And many of those are "Matched", meaning they only work with certain lenses. The lenses we're talking about her, aren't in that category.
