Certainly, good glass is necessary to get the most out of any DSLR... even a "crappy" one...!!

However, as the OP hasn't alerted us to the area of "IQ" he'd like to improve... or in his words... "if it's possible, I want more..." we're all kinda up a creek without a paddle...

If CA,lack of sharpness,distortion,vignetting etc are issues, then upgrading the glass is the way to go...
If one is seeking more DR,improved high iso performance,colour depth etc.. then maybe a body upgrade is the way to go... though with the models in question,that isn't really achievable... not least as the latest Nikon APS-C's are already strong performers in pretty much every regard...!

So,I guess, yes surplusshooter... a lens upgrade is your only option...
