Default D100 exposure compensation

You need to experiment with compensation. You can set it to add or decrease by thirds or halves. Just try + or - till it gets you consistant photos.

If you read my post of a few days ago, you know I was having trouble blowing out highlights. I was using +0.7 at the recommendation of someone who posted here several months ago--way too much for me. I dropped it to -0.3 and went out and shot a bunch of pictures around a new upscale shopping center in Lake Oswego, OR. I haven't downloaded the pictures, yet but I was getting blinking highlights in the LCD display for several shots.

A little blown highlight here and thee is not so bad. Bad is when someone's face is completelly washed out and there's nothing you can do about it. I try not to rely too much on the camera's metering, unless I have no time to make use of a light meter (like at a wedding ceremony or reception). But overall it's not bad.

I don't agree with you. If you can avoid them, why not. What's being the great thing taking a photo with washed out colors ? I don't get it. It's possible to eliminate almost any hightlight by underexpose the D100 with -.3 to -1.0.

What I meant was blown highlights like reflections or things other than the main subject
