Default Color Mode II files incompatible with iPhoto/PictureProject?

Hello.

I'm a proud owner of the Nikon D70 Kit. In the few days of using the camera, I have been impressed with the ease of use, quality of appearance and the well-written 207 page manual.

Now for the problem.

After altering the color mode in the D70 to II (Adobe RGB), iPhoto 4.0.1 and Picture Project 1.0 do not accept/automatically transfer these files from camera through USB cable to computer. However, color modes Ia (sRGB) and IIIa (sRGB) are accepted and transfer fine. I prefer mode II because I use Adobe Photoshop in my profession.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Suggestions? Help!

I have discovered the filename structure is different between mode II and I/III. An example of mode I/III files is "DSC_0001.jpg". While mode II files appear as "_DSC0001.jpg". Is this the cause of the problem?

I have contacted Nikon Tech Support about this matter. Their initial response was that the file structure of mode II, compared to I/III, is suppose to be different. During my conversation, the tech tested transferring files from camera through Picture Project software to computer, and reported no issues of doing so. However, his testing was done on a Windows platform. And their only Macintosh system on hand had Mac OS X 10.3.3 installed. Keep in mind Picture Project literature does indicate 10.1.5 compatibility. My computer has Mac OS X 10.2.8 installed.

For now, my work around has been to manually change the filename structure of color mode II (Adobe RGB) files from "_DSC0001.jpg" to "DSC_0001.jpg" for each and every file.

Your thoughts and advice for a solution is welcomed!

Regards,

Neil

I have absolutely no idea on how to help you with this problem.

Saying all that - Why don't you just get a card reader and transfer all the images to your hard drive and then work on them?

I can't imagine going through the job of hooking up my camera to the computer - It's so easy, practical - to just pop out the card, put it in the reader and you are done.

USB readers are very cheap - Firewire only a bit more expensive.

Default Update on Color Mode II compatibility.

Hello.

I have discovered a solution for allowing my color mode II images to automatically transfer into either iPhoto 4.0.1 and Picture Project 1.0. I changed the default USB setting from PTP to Mass Storage. Once the change was made, color mode II images transferred without a problem.

Please consider this method when faced with same situation.

That's good to know. Eventhough I don't have a D70 I will keep my D100 in mass storage ode just in case I only shoot in Adobe 1998 for its larger (and more accurate imo) color spectrum compared to modes I and III.
