Can someone expalin (in simple terms) how to set up / program manual white balance on the Nikon D70?

I found with the preset white balance you can use a white object that has some contrast (color), lock focus on the color protion, recompose and fill the frame with the white part of the object and release the shutter. I always get the "good" notice and it seems to work well. Let me know what you think if you try this.

Yes, as tksuther's mentioned - fill the frame with a white subject or a shade of grey (not colour, for obvious reasons). Anecdotally, a pringles lid does the job fantastically.

I usually use the manual since it is always in my bag. I can lock focus on some text and then flip and use the back cover to identify the white point.
