Hello:

I am a proud owner of the Nikon D70 with lens kit.

Recently, I have been wondering if the lens, AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED, is working properly. After taking into consideration the 1.5 multiple factor, I understand the focal length is suppose to be 27mm to 105mm. However, when the lens is set at 70mm (105MM) the view through the view finder is more like if I was looking through a 50mm lens.

How can I confirm the lens is working at 70mm (105mm)? Thank you.

Neil

As for the lens focal length, it is really a 70mm. So your picture, distance wise, lookslike it was taken with a 70mm or 50mm lens. There is a 1.5 conversion factor due to the size of the CCD in relation to the image seen by the lens. The end result is that the picture is cropped as if it were taken by a 105mm lens.

The only way you can really tell is to borrow a 50mm lens from a friend. I doubt your lens is defective. If the indicator can rotate to the 70mm mark, then it's zooming correctly.

NB: the Viewfinder as a magnification factor of 0.75x. So 70mm on a D70 would approximate a 50mm view in a true (ie. 1.00x magnification) viewfinder.
