Just recieved an e-mail from Nikon USA, it read:

Nikon has announced new firmware for the Nikon D70 to be released in the 4th quarter. This new release of firmware adds un-compressed RAW file format support to the camera, this will be a significant improvement of image quality. NEF files created in the Nikon D70 are compatible with Nikon View 6.2.2, Nikon Capture 4.1.0 and PictureProject 1.0 (or later).

Click the following link and select sign-up today ......... I think this is what you do to get updates such as the one posted by Rebel1. But I'm not sure since I just registered and haven't received anything yet.

I doubt this is true. I've always welcomed junk mail into my public email account and have registered for all sorts of newslists and the like, and have not heard anything.

I'm willing to put $5 Nikon has made no such announcement.

a) Isn't the RAW ( NEF ) format used in the D70 uncompressed already?

b) Isn't RAW compression generally lossless anyway?

if B = True;

What improvement to image quality would be seen?

The raw format in the D70 is compressed. At this time there is no way to turn that off. I'm not sure on the specifics, but my understanding is that Nikon's compression is called a visually lossless compression. In other words, the compression is lossy, but only in the area's that you could not see anyway. If that is true, I don't know how much better (if any) an uncompressed raw file would look.

Apparently, on the DPReview D70 forum it appears a concensus is that the email is a hoax (spoofed Nikon email address). Now for the validity of that, I don't know. I didn't receive the email. But based on what I am reading I am skeptical.

One thing that was pointed outne would think that news of a firmware update (either released or in the works), especially for the D70, would have made into the news bits on Steve's, DPReview, DCRP, etc. That alone makes me wonder.
