I append a review I have just read, which covers the D70 (but not the kit lens) and the new DX 17/55. I already have the D70, but don't like the plastic feel of the kit lens, so this also convinced me to buy the 17/55, and to hell with the cost!

Hope it interests you and is of use in decision making

"Underneath is a stainless-steel chassis and lens mount."

Stainless-steel chassis? Surprising if it's true... the D70 is so lightweight compared to pro dSLRs (or even Canon's 10D).
