I just picked up my D70 kit this afternoon and have been having a ball with it. I noticed Sigma makes a nice compact 28-300 That would be a great lens for me while taking my hikes where I didn't want to lug more than one lens. Has anyone used one? Any thoughts on how it might perform?

1. FYI: http://www.photoshot.com/articles/pr...a_28_300mm.htm
2. As with any 10x zoom, you'll be trading image quality for portability...

As long as you set your expectation along thoses lines you'll be OK

Thanks NHL, it sounds like it will be great for what I would use it as.

Hi,

Tamron makes a 28-300 as well that has won many prizes. I have a friendwho has the Tamron on a DRebel. The image quality is OK but the focusing speed is SLOW. Dont expect the Sigma to focus really faster than this one.

I ended up ordering one of the Sigma 18-125MM f/3.5-5.6 instead. I already have a Nikkor 70-300mm which I am happy with when I really need the power, I think the 125, will be good for an all around and from what I have read it has much better image quality then the 28-300. I should have the new one tomorrow. I'll post impressions here for anyone that's interested.
