I'm planning on photographing badges having chrome plating and embossed features. I'll use my D70 but I have no special lighting equip. After I have the photo I will remove any background, using photoshop, so the result will be the badge only. Any advice on the best setup for this?

All help appreciated!

Diffused Light, maybe outside if you can. Flash would create shadows, but may produce sharper images. Use black background.

Use a tripod and f8-f16 for good sharp pictures. Use a bigger f stop if you need more depth of field (f22). If your using your flash, you can diffuse the light by putting a ply of toilet paper over it to soften the light.

Try different angles and experiment.:-)

Perhaps, you want to invest in the ring light. B&H carries 2 which is about $90. They are Phoenix and Vivitar but make sure it is for Nikon.
