Can anyone help? Why am I getting this solid white elliptical shape around the sun? Is it normal and how can I overcome it, other than not shooting the sun in the shot? I asked the Nikon technical services dept who said it was just bleeding.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards, Tom:O

(ps I was shooting in Jpeg with the 18-70mm lens and a circular polarising filter, and it was very cold (-22degrees c)).

Could you post a picture of this "bleeding" so we can see what it looks like? Sounds either like lens flare or ghosting, or infrared light overwhelming the sensors.

The extremely bright sun is basically overdrivingthe sensor, adjacent photo sites are triggering. Only way to stop that is to seriously reduce the light intensity of the sun.

Small F-stop and maybe heavy ND filters, or Baader Solar film, but then everything else goes black.

BTW: for safety you should never point an unprotectedtelephoto at the sun, bad things can happen like a cooked camera, and a burned out eye!

That looks like an overwhelmed sensor... or a UFO :-)
