Default New D100 Owner (almost) Needs Advice on Filters

I have a new D100 on it's way to me. I also ordered a AFS 28-70 f2.8 D IF; a AFS 17-35 f2.8 D IF; and a AF VR 80-400 4.5/5.6 lenses. The question I have as a new person to Digital is should I buy UV filters (all 77mm) to protect the lenses (e.g. UV) or will this cause the photos to be of a lesser quality than using the lenses naked??? My plans are to take portraits, landscapes, and nature/wildlife shots and I want them to be as sharp as possible. I'm assuming the only purpose for the filters is protection as from what I've read I can use the digital darkroom to give the special effects filters might provide. I've looked at B+W filters and in the UV with multi coating and the thin size, they run about $109 each. Is this a worthwhile investment or will my photos suffer?
