Default Nikon new camera?

I think Nikon has to come out with a new professional camera
this year because of the larger pixeled Kodak and Canon Pro cameras that are out.

Depending how they price it, it should put downward price pressure
on the D1X and the D100.

What do you think?

Unless they try to price it at close to $3,000 I think it will drop the D100. I don't see the D1X droping. The higher end online shops still sell it for over $4,000!

But do you think the new camera will be aimed at the higher end of the pro market (D1/D1X/D1H were) or the lower end of the Pro market (D100)? I don't know where the newer Kodak or Canon cameras land.

The Canon is $8000 and the Kodak is going to be $5000 if they can actually get it out in March. They're in a whole different ballpark than the D100, and the D1's are already substantially cheaper. I wouldn't expect to see too much price movement from Nikon because of this. If sales soften, we'll probably see some more rebates though.

They should release a high end pro camera to compete.
I have seen the D1X selling new for as low as $3,000 on ebay.
This is far from the $5,500 street price in July.

While thats an attractive price, it is ebay. B & H photo sells
it for $4,150 after a $500 rebate.

Broadway photo sells it for....oh.... who would ever buy from them!

Who knows what the furure will hold, but if it is anything like the past five years we should be able to buy a Nikon D1x quality camera for $900 in about 2 years.

any comments?
