Is it normal to always see the frame counter on in the LCD even when the camera is off? My LCD always shows the number of frames available and I can't turn it off- even with the camera off......only disconnecting the battery turns everything off- but it goes back on when inserted!!!* *????

Yes it is normal. Even the film bodies show the remaining frames on a roll of film. It's nice to know how many frames are left before picking the camera up to use it. It also lets you know that you have a card inserted....these points help reduce the chance of missing a shot.
