I see approximately $115 (depending on the vendor) between the two flashes above for my D50. The 'specs' look impressively better (impression) on the 800 over the 600 and of course 'ya get what ya pay for' but....

Are my impressions correct? I have no specific task at hand, just building on my outfit/learning tools.

Anyone with a talent for distilling it down as you have on so many other comparative specs questions into layman's terms (you could do this with the 800 but not with the 600) would be greatly appreciated if you have the time.

Thanks,

M

True the 800 has a few more bells and whistles and is slightly more powerful. However, the 600 is smaller, almost as strong, and does everything most amateurs would ever need. Unless you absolutely need one of the extra features, the SB600 is a great bargain.

Thanks! That was what I suspected, but wanted to be sure. I didn't want to spend the extra $$ and realize, oh if only I'd gotten the 800 I could have....

Thanks,

M

p.s. Similar advice on going with the D50 versus the D70s based on my amateur status was invaluable. I think actually I should adopt a new statusbesides amateur, something below that, like 'dumb-bunny'-that-tries? Thanks y'all!!!

I also see somewhere in-between the price of the 600 and 800 this:

Sigma EF-500 DG Super i-TTL Shoe Mount Flash (Guide No. 165'/50 m at 105mm) for Nikon with i-TTL Operation

My impression was it appears to have slower refresh rate than the 600. Am also assuming it's the bells-n-whistles I would never miss over the 600 case as well.

Think I read somewhere to stick with only the Nikon branded 600 or 800 for the D50.

Just curious. Looks like the 600 is where I'll invest.

Thanks,

M

I own D50 and I am also considering Sigma EF-500 DG Super. But I am wondering if this Flash can be triggered with D50's built in flash wirelessly.

I never got a response on this Sigma flash priced between the SB600 versus the SB800. But as I posted, I swear I read somewhere, not to venture outside these two models by Nikon.
